The Important Things You Need to Know About Portfolio
A portfolio is something investors often check frequently to assess the performance of their asset trades.
But do you know the crucial importance of having a portfolio in trading and investing? Or if you already know, do you fully understand how to create a good investment portfolio that aligns with your financial goals?
In this lesson, we will guide you to deeply understand the concept of an investment portfolio and help you master the essentials of portfolio management.
What is an Investment Portfolio?
An investment portfolio is a place to store, manage, and monitor all of an investor’s financial assets. It provides a centralized view of your trading account and all your trading activities across various instruments and markets. Whether you’re investing in stocks, commodities, forex, or CFDs, a portfolio helps you track everything in one place.
The primary purpose of a portfolio is to help investors achieve their financial goals, which could include capital appreciation, income generation, or risk diversification. A well-managed portfolio reflects your trading strategy and risk tolerance.
Your trading portfolio is made up of three core components you must understand:
-
Account
-
Position
-
Order

Next, let’s explore each of these components of a trading portfolio in detail.
1. Account – Your Investment Foundation
Your trading account is the base of your portfolio. It represents your capital and shows how much money you have available to invest or allocate across different positions. It also reflects real-time financial performance, including unrealized profits/losses and your equity value.
Key Metrics in an Account:
-
Available: The available funds or cash balance in your account that can be used for new investments.
-
Allocate: The total amount already allocated or invested into various assets.
-
Profit/Loss (Unrealized): Gains or losses from open positions that haven’t been closed yet.
-
Equity: The overall value of your portfolio. It’s calculated as Available + Allocate + Unrealized P/L.
This part of the portfolio is essential for portfolio management because it shows your investment capacity and liquidity at any given moment.
2. Position – Active Trades in Your Portfolio
A position is an asset that you currently hold in your portfolio. When you open a position, it means you have executed a trade—either buying or selling a financial instrument such as a stock, forex pair, or CFD.
For example, if you buy AAPL stock with a $1,000 investment, that transaction immediately becomes a position in your portfolio.
Key Components of a Position:
-
Symbol: The instrument symbol (e.g., AAPL for Apple stock).
-
Direction: Indicates whether you chose a Buy (long) or Sell (short) position.
-
Leverage: The multiplier used to amplify your investment power.
-
Amount: The actual capital allocated to the position (margin).
-
Units: The number of shares, lots, or contracts you’re holding.
-
Open Price: The price at which the position was opened.
-
Stop Loss: A risk management feature to limit potential losses.
-
Take Profit: A target price where you want to lock in profit.
-
Current Price: The live market price of the asset.
-
P/L ($): The real-time profit or loss on the position.
Understanding your positions is vital for active portfolio management because each open position contributes to your overall risk and return profile.
3. Order – Planned Trades Awaiting Execution
An order is an instruction to buy or sell a financial asset at a specific price. Orders are used to plan trades ahead of time or to trade when markets are closed. In IUX Invest, there are two main types of orders:
3.1 Pending Order
A Pending Order is a trade setup where you specify the price at which you want to buy or sell an asset. Once the market reaches that price, the system executes the trade and opens a position automatically. You can cancel a pending order anytime before execution.
3.2 Entry Order
An Entry Order is similar to a pending order but is specifically designed for instruments with defined market hours (e.g., stock markets). When the market opens, your order is automatically executed. Like pending orders, entry orders can be canceled before the market opens or the trade is triggered.
You can learn more about orders in Episode 1: Open Position.

How Portfolio Components Work Together
1. From Account to Position
-
You start by depositing funds into your investment account.
-
When you open a position, funds are deducted from your available balance and used as margin.
-
As the market moves, your unrealized profits/losses update in real time.
-
When you close the position, your gains or losses are finalized and reflected in your account balance.
2. From Order to Position
-
You can place a buy or sell order at a specific price (or while the market is closed).
-
Funds are temporarily deducted from your account but held in reserve.
-
Once the market reaches your target price or opens for trading, the order is executed, and it becomes an active position.
-
If you cancel the order before execution, the reserved funds are returned to your account.
Final Summary – The Importance of Your Investment Portfolio
